OVERVIEW
Provide neat, accurate, easy-to-follow designs that meet code requirements, manufacturing restraints and system deadlines that result in least cost, easy to erect building systems that meet the customer’s needs and company procedures. Building upon foundational engineering experience, this mid-level role involves greater responsibility in project coordination, design optimization, and mentoring of junior engineers. Engineers are expected to independently manage moderately complex projects, ensuring designs meet structural code requirements, manufacturing standards, and customer expectations.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES
- Proven ability to work independently with minimal supervision, managing individual projects from start to finish while meeting critical deadlines.
- Good understanding of structural engineering principles, with the ability to apply and adapt company design standards to unique and custom-building conditions.
- Proficiency in using structural design software and a willingness to continuously expand technical knowledge, particularly in the customization of tools for non-standard applications.
- Generate design packages, review drawings and material lists.
- Adhere to project schedules, effectively managing shifting priorities and last-minute revisions to maintain on-time delivery.
- Communicate effectively with cross-functional team members to promptly identify, escalate, and resolve design challenges.
- Coordinate with drafting, estimating, and manufacturing teams to ensure design feasibility and efficiency.
- Exercise sound engineering judgment to ensure public safety, balancing efficiency with appropriate design conservatism.
- Demonstrate a strong understanding of the broader project lifecycle and remain flexible in contributing beyond core responsibilities when necessary.
- Ability to mentor and review the work of junior engineers to ensure accuracy and adherence to design standards.
- Manage multiple project schedules and adjust to shifting priorities while maintaining design quality.
- Identify opportunities for design improvements and cost reduction through innovative engineering solutions.
QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS
- Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) with demonstrated competence in structural design and code compliance.
- Seal and sign calculations and/or drawings in various state jurisdictions.
- Proven ability to design metal buildings of medium to high complexity, ensuring efficiency, safety, and adherence to customer specifications.
- Consistently drives productivity improvements while maintaining high standards of accuracy and completeness, with a focus on reducing manufacturing and drafting costs and enhancing efficiency and overall customer value.
- Capable of managing projects through all phases—from initial design through final project completion—ensuring coordination across departments.
- Skilled in balancing and prioritizing multiple concurrent projects in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
- Provides technical oversight, reviews work, and mentors junior engineers to support professional development and maintain quality standards.
- Strong knowledge in design standards and design software.
- Effective communication and teamwork skills in a fast-paced engineering environment.
EDUCATION/ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
- Bachelor’s degree in civil or Structural Engineering (or related field).
- Professional Engineering (PE or SE) Licensure
- Minimum of 4 years of relevant experience in metal building design or structural engineering.
- Proficient in structural design and modeling software (e.g., RISA, STAAD, AutoCAD, or equivalent).
