Job Description

The State Tax Director is a key member of the corporate tax team and will work closely with the Vice President – Tax.  You will lead all aspects of the Company's state income tax function, including oversight of state income tax compliance, management of state tax audits, support M&A, lead state income tax planning, and support the state income tax provision process.

The State Income Tax Director will have a high detail orientation and drive efficiencies throughout the tax function.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Overall leadership and responsibility of the state income tax profile.
  • Manages and reviews the state income tax provision, prepared in accordance with ASC 740, including apportionment data, tax rates, state modifications, documenting and maintaining state uncertain tax positions, and analysis of state tax attributes.
  • Responsible for state income tax planning including support and implementation of strategic planning to align with the Company's tax profile objectives.
  • Responsible for writing tax memos in order to document the Company's tax positions when appropriate.
  • Interprets and provides guidance on any new state tax laws that impact the Company.
  • Oversees the state income tax compliance process including estimates, extensions, and return filing.
  • Leads state tax controversy matters, including examinations and audit defense planning.
  • Oversees the tax calendar for state compliance tasks.
  • Develops junior tax team members in their technical and professional career aspirations.
  • Partners with other stakeholders throughout the Company.

 


Qualifications

  • 10+ years of experience with a combination of Big 4 public accounting and corporate experience preferred.
  • CPA or Masters in Tax is required.
  • A proven track record with interpreting tax laws, technical documents and government regulations.
  • Understanding ASC 740 and federal income tax concept.
  • Experience with purchase accounting
  • Adept at managing state controversy and interacting with the state tax authorities.
  • Experience interpreting and communicating technical tax issues to non-technical internal or external clients.
  • Experience in managing outside resources and budget-related issues.
  • Strong technical accounting skills.
  • Proven record of directly managing people, including hiring, developing, and motivating.
  • Experience with OneSource.
